The Occitanie region pays tribute to Cabu in Toulouse and Montpellier
From May 3 to June 19, 2022, the Regional Hotels of Toulouse and Montpellier are hosting the “Le Rire de Cabu” exhibition. A tribute that the Occitanie region wishes to pay to the designer.
Cabu’s drawings will be on view in the premises of the Region. A Toulouse as in Montpellierthe Occitanie region wished to pay tribute to Cabu. As a reminder, the designer was one of the victims of the terrorist attack against Charlie Hebdo on January 7, 2015. This tribute was imagined in the form of exhibitions of works by the artist, “Le Rire de Cabu”. From Tuesday 3 May to Sunday 19 June 2022the drawings will be visible within the Hôtel de Région in Toulouse and on the forecourt of the Hôtel de Région in Montpellier.
The Occitanie region plans to inaugurate the exhibition Tuesday, May 3, World Press Freedom Day. Carole Delga, President of the Occitania regionand Véronique Cabut wanted to pay a “joyful tribute to Cabu who was one of the most talented and popular press cartoonists of his generation”, explains the Region.
“Le Rire de Cabu” at the Hôtel de Région in Toulouse
The two emblematic places of the administration then welcome this tribute. In Toulouse, 400 original drawings will be exhibited. Visitors could discover these works that have accompanied generations of readers and viewers pendant over 60 years. The exhibition route is organized around eight inspirational themes:
- Cabu’s characters (Grand Duduche, Le Beauf, Dorothée, Catherine, Warrant Officer Kronenbourg, etc.);
- La France de Cabu (society, consumption, women, young people, Paris, cities and a special Occitanie selection);
- The Cabu method (to draw like him);
- Cabu’s “people” (from Johnny to Zemmour);
- The presidents of Cabu (from Macron to Auriol);
- Le Jazz de Cabu (musical interlude);
- Cabu’s struggles (ecology, pacifism, freedom of expression);
- Cabu’s pantheon (essential masters and unforgettable friends).
The Region is also planning a space within the exhibition with tables, chairs, mirrors and drawing materials. This installation invites young and old to try their hand at caricature. The young public and the school public are welcome thanks to a specific course. 7-12 year olds can bring along a game booklet available on request at the entrance to the exhibition.
Tribute to Cabu on the forecourt of the Hôtel de Région in Montpellier
On the side of Montpellier, 24 tarpaulins on the theme “Cabu, all-terrain designer” will be presented. They broadcast a preview of unpublished photos and large-format drawings on the forecourt of the Hôtel de Région in Montpellier. This exhibition focuses on 6 themes:
- Montpellier (with a report from 1972 and unpublished sketches of the old town);
- Passers-by;
- Travel;
- The music ;
- Pastiches;
- Dubout’s influence.
Certain famous heads of the Region will appear in these works and documents. With in particular Georges Brassens and Charles Trenet on the musical side or Albert Dubout who activated Cabu.
