Volos: A minor was bitten by a “black widow” spider – Transferred to Athens

The attempt to save a 4-year-old child in Volos, which was bitten by a spider belonging to the “black widow” species, its sting which can be fatal. Initially, the child was transported to the Hospital of Volos, but then he had to be rushed to the Children’s Hospital of Athens by EKAB ambulance.
According to the website theNewspaper.gr, the child was playing carefree on the second day of Easter on the lawn of a cafe in Portaria, Pelion, when he felt the sting. His parents immediately ran to him. The child’s hand had become red, hard, while it was in severe pain. They immediately contacted the Poison Center, from which they were informed about the “black widow” bite, while instructions were given for the transfer of the 4-year-old to the nearest hospital.
The child stayed for 24 hours in the hospital of Attica and was discharged, while now he is in good health.
The “black widow” is not an exotic species. It is found in various parts of Greece and the Mediterranean in general, with its attacks, however, are not frequent. Its sting can even lead to death in more diseased organisms, such as the elderly, vulnerable groups, young children and allergic individuals.
The poison of the “black widow” affects a number of organs and functions of the human body and that is why the antidote must be given very quickly.
