What to do in Pisa and its province on the weekend of 30 April and 1 May 2022
If the day of April 25, the anniversary of the Liberation, fell perfectly, the beautiful week of May 1st is less fortunate in timing. Yes, because the long awaited Workers Day it falls on a Sunday. And if you can’t always be lucky, at least there is no shortage of things to do in Pisa and its province. By all possible means: from hiking to bicycles, from boat trips to panoramic helicopter flights. Without forgetting the music, the fairs and the meetings in the library.
Saturday 30th April the chance to enjoy a nice one is back boat trip along the Arno. From the Roncioni airport, in the historic center of Pisa, to the Arno mouth (and back). An opportunity to enjoy the landscape and to learn about all the stories that unfold along the river. Stories of small ships that sailed its waters, of forgotten heroes, love stories and mullets jumped from fishermen’s nets. Reservation is mandatory.
If the perspective from the river is not enough, there is also another way to admire the Pisan landscape. Unusual, of course, but among the most evocative. Just get on a helicopter. It is not every day thing, but on the occasion of Sunday 1st May it will be possible to try an experience of scenic flight in the splendid setting of the Pratello airfield. The aerial tour, lasting just under 10 minutes over the 3200 hectares of the Pratello estate, will fly over the healthiest countryside at an altitude of about 200 meters on a panoramic circuit and then head above Castelfalfi and discover the beauty of the views of this magnificent village.
For those who prefer more traditional means, but still capable of giving wonderful landscapes, Sunday 1st May abike excursion through the Pisan countryside to Fauglia, in the middle of the Tuscan hills. The route, of about 50 km in total, takes place almost entirely on a paved road, with short dirt tracks, and includes two km of uphill to reach the village of Fauglia, where it is possible to have a packed lunch or a restaurant.
This weekend there is no shortage of excursions to do on foot. A nice itinerary, without going too far, is the one that follows the ‘Pisa ‘o’ 00 ‘path, an axial path from one end of Monte Pisano to the other. Departure from San Giuliano Terme in the direction of Ripafratta, also passing through the famous Dante’s pass. The appointment is for Sunday 1st May.
The appointment with the Agrifiera at the ‘Tiziano Terzani’ Peace Park in Pontasserchio. Lots of events: in the meantime Sunday 1st May there is the long-awaited award ceremony of the best cake with bischeri, while Saturday 30 April to the already rich program are added several presentations of books. There will then be guided walks in search of wild herbs, games from the past, vinyl bikes and lots of music. Without forgetting of course the numerous stands dedicated to agriculture, flowers, crafts, horse riding and excellent food and wine productions of the territory.
Saturday 30th April is the International Jazz Day, a day to appreciate the cultural and musical phenomenon of Jazz and its ability to unite people in all corners of the globe. And in Pisa it is celebrated with a double concert (in streaming and in presence) at the Circle Exwide. The first is the ‘Management laboratory of the Liceo Carducci of Pisa, who will perform in concert with a real improvisation musical laboratory. The second instead sees on stage the quartet ‘Play Ellington!’, ‘sacred monster’ of Jazz.
A guided tour in the heart of Pisa to discover the places of Galileo. Saturday 30th April a city tour is scheduled that retraces the places, or less known, connected to the most Pisan scientist. From the baptistery, transformed into a place of experiment, to the Torre della Verga d’Oro, from the Palazzo della Sapienza to the house where he lived, just to name a few.
If time doesn’t hold up, Sunday 1st May you can take refuge in a museum. Among these, one of the richest and little known in the area is that of San Matteo in Pisa, where some of the most important works of medieval art are kept. An opportunity to discover them (or rediscover them) with a guided tour.
An afternoon among the books. Saturday 30th April the appointment with i is back Bibliosabatithe extraordinary openings of the Municipal Library of Castelfranco di Sotto. To be presented this time is the book by Andrea Falaschi ‘The paper cheat’ published by Bientina’s ‘La Grafica Pisana’: an original volume, highly curated from a graphic point of view, which collects and tells the author’s personal collection of 130 posters, posters and photo envelopes in a backward journey from 2010 to 1934. In short , a real ‘tribute’ to graphics.
