Folk festival season in Berlin! Start of the Neukölln May Days – BZ Berlin
The folk festival season in Berlin is picking up speed: From Friday, the Neukölln May Days will take place in Hasenheide. After a two-year Corona break, the showmen see a lot of catching up to do among the visitors.
After a two-year break due to the corona pandemic, the Neukölln May Days will start again this Friday in the Volkspark Hasenheide – without the obligation to wear masks and tests. “We assume that the popularity will be no less than at the last “Neuköllner Maientage” in 2019,” says Bernd Schwintowski, spokesman for the Neuköllner Maientage. On May 1st alone, more than 60,000 visitors attended the folk festival.
“In total, well over 100,000 visitors are likely to come to Hasenheide, since it was found at much smaller folk festivals in recent weeks that the population has a lot of catching up to do,” says Schwintowski. The showmen have been at events since the beginning of April – and even when the weather is bad, these are well attended.
Until May 22, there are regular performances by artists on the stages in Hasenheide from Wednesday to Sunday and fireworks every Saturday evening. A special solidarity day for Czech families with their children is also planned. They should be able to use the rides and carousels free of charge. Around 100 showmen are expected, and there will also be numerous food stalls.
The showmen are confident that small and large festivals can take place as usual in summer. Other major folk festivals that start in Berlin afterwards are, for example, the Steglitz Week (May 26 to June 12) or the Berlin Folk Festival Summer (June 17 to July 31).
