Florence, a garden dedicated to Remo Petroni
The parks dedicated to the sisters Caterina and Nadia Nencioni and Peppino Impastato are also on the way
Three green areas in the District 2 of Florence named after the victims of terrorist and mafia violence. This is the Remo Petroni garden and the two areas of the Mensola park that they will carry in the name of sisters Caterina and Nadia Nencioni and Peppino Impastato. This is what is established by two resolutions recently approved by the municipal council on the proposal of the councilor for Toponymy and Culture of Memory Alessandro Martini.
“These resolutions are particularly important – underlines the commissioner Martini – and testify to the commitment of the municipal administration, the districts and the city for the preservation of memory. As councilor for Toponymy and the Culture of Memory, I very gladly accepted the requests of the president Michele Pierguidi and the district councilors who in turn collected the requests received from citizens, sensitive to the memory and to the recollection of episodes and people who are part of our history”.
The commissioner adds that the naming of the park area to the little sisters Nencioni is scheduled for May 26, as part of the celebrations for the 29th anniversary of the Georgofili massacre. The ceremony relating to the garden dedicated to Remo Petroni was set for 30 June, the date on which he was killed in the performance of his duty in 1977. “For Petroni, the conversation with the president of the municipal council Luca Milani was also important. had with the widow Antonella Pazzaglia. With this title we respect a commitment that is made during that meeting “.
“A lot of satisfaction because there was a clear indication from the District 2 council for these titles – adds the president Michele Pierguidi -. For the Parco del Mensola a motion voted unanimously for the dedication to the Nencioni sisters and Peppino Impastato; the same for Remo Petroni with a motion approved at the beginning of the council. It is a fair recognition of very important figures for the city and for all of us “.
The request to name a green area a Remo Petroni, 23-year-old security guard who was killed in the night between 29 and 30 June 1977 after having foiled a terrorist attack on the aqueduct tower in via Moreni, in fact came from the District Council 2 also supported by a group of inhabitants of Coverciano. The public garden has been identified between via Pistelli, via Moreni and via D’Ancona.
The proposals to dedicate the Parco del Mensola to victims of the mafia: the northern part, between via D’Annunzio and via della Torre, to the Nencioni sisters who were killed in the massacre of via dei Georgofili; the southern part, between via della Torre and via della Chimera, to Peppino Impastato, journalist and radio host murdered by the mafia for his reporting activity.
