Covid-19: The number of tests continues to decrease in Luxembourg

LUXEMBOURG – Fewer infections, but also fewer tests. As in the rest of the world, the number of screenings has decreased in Luxembourg, in line with the analysis of the pandemic situation.
“Faced with a deadly virus, ignorance does not bring happiness”, alerted the director general of the WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, faced with the decrease in the number of tests on the planet. The testing rate has dropped by 70-90% worldwide. And Luxembourg is no exception to the rule. According to the latest retrospective provided Wednesday by the Ministry of Health, 12,910 tests were carried out between April 18 and 24 against 15,338 the previous week (- 15.8%).
For the record, Luxembourg achieved almost three times more last winter. The consequences of a “return to normal life” and less concern given to a Covid infection. Now similar to an influenza virus, less severe since the emergence of the Omicron variant, Covid-19 is nonetheless extremely contagious, and dangerous for the most vulnerable.
Seven days in a week
In this context, the decrease in the number of people tested positive over one week (4,311 against 5,403, -20%) remains difficult to assess. On the positive side, the contaminations slowed down more quickly than the number of tests, but it should be considered that a third of the tests were positive. Clearly, the return of spring weather has positively influenced the number of infections, but the virus is still circulating.
And it continues to threaten the very old in particular. Between April 18 and 24, seven new deaths linked to Covid-19 were to be deplored. The average age of the victims was 91 years old. “This virus will not go away just because countries stop looking for it. It is still spreading, it is still changing and it is still killing,” the WHO director recalled.
