What is left of the Berlin Wall – BZ Berlin
The Berlin Wall is only visible in a few places in the capital – but there are numerous and traces of the classic border system.
A new online portal, the Berlin Wall Foundation, has been documenting this since Tuesday and enables a digital exploration tour. Under the title “wall tracesThe project gives an overview of what is left of the Wall in and around Berlin. The course of the border can be seen on a digital map. If you click on individual points, photos and corresponding explanations become visible. Changes over the years can be explored using a timeline.
With the new portal, which was funded by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media with 18,000 euros, the foundation has expanded its digital offering. About a month ago, she put her collection of around 10,000 objects on the subject of the Wall and division online. The new offer is based on this, said a foundation spokeswoman.
“We want to use “Wall Traces” to sensitize people to the history of their neighborhood and their surroundings,” explained project manager Cornelia Thiele. Initially, about 170 tracks were recorded. The offer should be expanded. Tips from Berliners are welcome. “This is how a living platform can develop,” said Thiele.
The foundation includes five historical sites in Berlin, including the Berlin Wall Memorial, the Marienfelde Refugee Center Memorial and the East Side Gallery. Original objects and historical artefacts relating to the Berlin Wall and the history of division are included in the inventory.
