Henry I of Luxembourg – The biography of Henry I of Luxembourg with Voici.fr
Born April 16, 1955 in Betzdorf, Luxembourg, Henri de Nassau, eldest son of Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte, is Grand Duke of Luxembourg. His birth, ensuring the inheritance of the crown, is rewarded with one hundred cannon shots. However, protected by the discretion of his family, the prince grew up far from the media scene and spent his childhood in the castle of Betzdorf.
After the European School in Luxembourg, he moved to France and studied at the Stanislas high school in Nice, where he obtained his baccalaureate in 1974. He then trained as an officer at the Royal Academy of Sandhurst, in England.
In 1976, he joined the University of Geneva, from which he graduated in political science. It was during his studies in Switzerland that he met his future wife, Maria Teresa Mestre. If the family of the heir initially expresses reluctance concerning his union with the daughter of a rich Cuban bourgeois, the marriage of the young couple is attributed on February 14, 1981. Together, they welcome five children: Prince Guillaume (born November 11, 1981), Prince Félix (born June 3, 1984), Prince Louis (born August 3, 1986), Princess Alexandra (born February 16, 1991) and Prince Sebastian (born April 16, 1992).
Sensitive to European politics and polyglot, Henri is involved in the political life of Luxembourg, as an ex officio member of the Council of State. With his wife, he is also involved in several charities.
On October 7, 2000, after the abdication of his father, Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg, he became Henri I of Luxembourg, the sixth Grand Duke of the dynasty.
