Sunday April 24, 2022, Emmanuel Macron (LREM) was re-elected President of the Republic, obtaining 58.5% of the vote ahead of Marine Le Pen (RN). If the strong abstention (28.01% in France, 29.49% in Toulouse) has been talked about, the blank vote also received special attention.
Multiplied by 6 compared to the first round…
In the second round, Toulouse had 258,806 registered. 182,472 spoke (70.51%), 76,334 abstained (29.49%). But 13,432 votes were blank, or 5.19% of registered voters, and 7.36% of voters. A trend that has exploded compared to the first round.
Indeed, two weeks earlier, on Sunday April 10, 2022, only 2,373 Toulouse residents had made this choice in the polling stations. A figure that represents 0.92% of registered voters, and 1.19% of voters. The number of blank votes was multiplied by more than sixin two weeks.
And compared to 2017?
What is the impact compared to 2017? In terms of gross figures, the trend is almost similar since 2,535 blank votes had been due in the first round (0.94% of registered voters and 1.28% of voters), and 14,541 to the second (5.41% of registered voters, and 8.03% of voters).
In the second round of 2022, there were therefore a thousand fewer white votes, in Toulouse, compared to 2017, a ballot during which the Pink City planned… 10,000 additional subscribers (268,849, against 258,806 this Sunday).
And the national trend?
In the fourth largest city in France, abstention was higher than in mainland France: same for blank votes. Nationwide, they represented 4.57% of registered voters and 6.35% of voters, against, therefore, respectively, 5.19 and 7.36% in Toulouse.
Blank vote, invalid vote, abstention: what’s the difference?
Blank vote, invalid vote, abstention: these terms are referred in a loop at each ballot. As a reminder, the white vote consists in depositing in the ballot box an empty envelope, or one containing a ballot that does not include the name of the candidate. A vote is considered invalid when the ballot is torn or annotated. Finally, an elector abstains when he does not vote.
