According to Fico, not Hungary or Poland, but Slovakia is the ulcer on the body of Europe
Not Hungary or Poland, but Slovakia is the ulcer on the body of Europe, said former Slovak prime minister Robert Fico, currently chairman of the opposition Direction-Social Democracy (Smer-SD) party, in a press conference in Bratislava on Saturday.
Fico has dismissed the lawsuit filed against him by Robert Kalina, a special unit of the Slovak police, the National Law Enforcement Agency (NAKA) and his government’s former interior minister. NAKA accused Fico and Kalina of setting up and supporting a criminal association, abusing official authority, and repeatedly committing commercial, banking, postal, telecommunications, and tax secrets.
Robert Fico described the allegations as baseless and political revenge. He said that he had informed his former partners in the letter to the European Council, which brings together the heads of state and government of the EU member states, and to the political groups in the European Parliament.
The former prime minister stated that “today’s Slovak society is not democratic, Slovakia is not a state governed by the rule of law” but an “American province”. He says the country is headed by “criminals,” while Republican President Zuzana Caputová is an “American woman” who serves Washington’s interests.
In response to a journalist’s question, Fico reiterated that the problem in Europe is not Hungary or Poland, but Slovakia, where the government “wants to clear the way” and “imprison” the leader of the strongest opposition party. Fico sharply criticized former Prime Minister Igor Matovic, Minister of Finance, and Daniel Lipsic, head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office (NSP), as a fascist and a criminal.
“Hungary is being attacked because the ruling party is fulfilling the program it promised voters in the elections.” pointed out the former Slovak prime minister.
The Special Criminal Court is expected to decide on the pre-trial detention of former Interior Minister Robert Kalinák on Saturday afternoon. Robert Fico is a Member of Parliament and will therefore be prosecuted only after his immunity has been waived. The Slovak parliament will address this issue next week.
