National mobility plan: Luxembourg will have to absorb 40% more trips by 2035

LUXEMBOURG – The demand for mobility will increase by 2035. How to meet it? Not with the all-car, says François Bausch.
Minister François Bausch presented the National Mobility Plan 2035.
The essential
“The goal is to anticipate problems rather than chasing after them”, points out the Minister of Mobility and Public Works François Bausch (déi gréng) when presenting the National Mobility Plan (PNM) 2035, this Friday at the Rotundas. The thick document of some 200 pages constitutes a vast overview for mobility in Luxembourg in the next 13 years, with new concepts and many concrete projects, so that “it goes better than today, with less cars than today.
“If Luxembourg continues to develop in the way we expect, we will have an additional demand for mobility of 40%”, indicates the minister. So, by 2035, the Grand Duchy will experience 40% more travel. “That does not mean 40% more cars,” said the minister. “We have analyzed what needs to be done at national and cross-border level to control this additional demand, so that it works better than today, so that there are fewer cars than today. today” today”.
“A quality offer”
Results, a whole strategy for travel within the different regions of the country, the agglomerations… to make all the modes of travel consistent, according to the needs and “the reality of the probable developments of the coming years”. And, therefore, by combining all the possibilities. “We must look at mobility in a multimodal way, no longer looking at a road as an infrastructure for cars, but classifying them as multimodal corridors”, which can be shared with bicycles, pedestrians, trams, buses…”
This complementarity is taken into account for all means of transport. “A train network must be combined with the tram, the road, by providing interchange hubs everywhere, so that at any time you can switch from one infrastructure to another”. The PNM therefore intends to improve this interconnection, by allowing for example, to easily leave your car (several more P+R are planned) to jump on a train, then on a tram which will take you to your destination. All while providing quality infrastructure. “I am convinced that people are willing to change their behavior if they have a quality alternative offer”.
Reviewed every five years
An example of improvement, the creation of railways between Differdange and Bascharage, which saves about twenty minutes on a journey between the southern city and Luxembourg City. A project which must materialize by 2030. New ramifications of the tram, too, must improve the network in the capital, towards the CHL and Hollerich. Peripheral connections around the capital must take out passing traffic and make room for developing alternatives to the car. Just for the city, 35 structuring projects are planned, such as the boulevards of Merl and Cessange, a road from the N7 to the N11…
Corridors with a high level of service (CHNS) to get buses out of traffic jams in sensitive places, continuous sidewalks at intersections to make walking more pleasant for pedestrians, cycle paths… The PNM brings together a host of projects existing and new. It is called upon to be reviewed every five years to adapt to the reality of developments in the Grand Duchy.
