The Federal Senate of Brazil, the University of Coimbra, the Municipality of Coimbra and the Associação Portugal Brasil 200 years signed two technical cooperation agreements this afternoon, at the Rectory of the University of Coimbra, which aim to mark the 200th anniversary of the independence of Brazil.
On this occasion, Rodrigo Pacheco highlighted the healthy relationship between the two countries, historically marked by good coexistence.
“The Brazilian people and the institutions of Brazil may be a unique opportunity, a unique opportunity, among them the Federal Senate, to reaffirm our bicentennial population and deep respect for Portugal and its support”.
According to the Federal Senate of Brazil, the agreement signed includes a vast program, around the project “200 years, 200 books”, which aims to stimulate and disseminate “Portuguese and Brazilian culture to the entire Brazilian people”.
“We will hold a solemn session at the National Congress, on September 8, for which we will be as Portuguese authorities, including the President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, so that together in Brazil we celebrate 200 years of independence”, he announced.
Rodrigo Pacheco also hopes that the good relationship between Brazil and Portugal can be “reinvigorated”, based on language, culture, art and food, but also with partnerships and trade agreements “between the two friendly nations”.
“Our mother shovel, Portugal, is thus recognized by Brazilians and this will be very marked in this year of the bicentennial of Brazil’s independence”, he said.
In his speech at the protocol signing ceremony, the Federal Senate of Brazil also alluded to the fundamental role that the University of Coimbra has as president as “cradle of knowledge of Europe and the world” and that he also left in Brazil, specified in the elaboration of the first law codes.
“Coimbra is always alive in Brazilian legislation”, he highlighted.
The rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão, took a moment for teaching to stress that the foreign community in this establishment is surpassing levels recorded before the pandemic.
“The Brazilian student community makes us the largest Brazilian university outside Brazil”.
About the protocols, Amílcar Falcão elaborated as a great responsibility of the University of Coimbra that was chosen to be signed of the 200 years of the independence of Brazil.
“We wish for a Portuguese reinforcement of bilateral relations more deeply constituted by the Portuguese language, which unites Portugal, Brazil and the key unit of our region in the new global world”, he concluded.
