India-Sweden Healthcare Innovation Center, AIIMS New Delhi, AIIMS Jodhpur launches e-learning initiative for nurses in better management of NCDs, Health News, ET HealthWorld
In its first phase, the program focuses on the prevention of diabetes management and awareness based on a comprehensive world-class curriculum created from various resources available within the NCD domain according to the NPCDCS guidelines. This program content and modules are created by the team of experts from AIIMS Jodhpur and an advisory board with representation from AIIMS Delhi, ICMR, DGHS, Indian Nursing Council (INC) and AstraZeneca. These modules will equip nurses to provide standardized and quality counseling, care and support services to people to prevent and manage diabetes. Thereafter, these trainings will be extended to other areas of NCDs in the subsequent phases such as hypertension, cardiovascular and oncology.
Using a multi-phase approach, the Skill for Scale program aims to develop 5,000 nurses across the country by this year by transforming the current theoretical and practical modules into simple interactive e-learning techniques. Dr Sanjeev Misra, Director, AIIMS Jodhpur, explained the need for such an educational program, saying: “Through this initiative, we try to bridge the knowledge gap that exists at the point of care for patients. The curriculum for this program is carefully designed to enable nurses to deliver specialized care. , essential support services and standardized counseling for patients living with an increasing incidence of non-communicable diseases in India ‘.
This e-learning mobile compatible program is linked to two levels – basic and advanced and includes a training of 20-24 hours to be completed at your own pace. The course can be completed within a period of two months to which each student will be awarded a completion certificate and can utilize CME credits through the Indian Nursing Council.

The government’s recognition of this program will go a long way to delivering accurate health information and ensuring safe basic health services,” he said. At the end of the training, nurses will be able to recognize risk factors, causes, pathophysiology, screening methods, diagnostic tests and management of diabetes. They will gain an understanding of initiating prompt action for confirmatory diagnosis and appropriate treatment, making rapid referrals of complicated cases, following standard treatment protocols, giving advice and interacting on the importance of early diabetes screening, educating society on adopting healthy lifestyles and helping them to overcome barriers, myths and misconceptions.

The initiative will be implemented under the chairmanship of an Advisory Committee chaired by Prof Suresh K Sharma, Professor and Rector, College of Nursing, AIIMS Jodhpur. The Advisory Committee consists of key dignitaries from AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Jodhpur, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Indian Nursing Council (INC), AstraZeneca India and Business Sweden. This committee will be responsible for describing and reviewing the entire action plan, guiding the overall framework, planning and implementing the initiative on the spot, continuous evaluation of the project and developing a model for possible replication across the country.
