15 Everymen for the City of Salzburg
Culture
The Salzburg artist Günther Edlinger portrayed fifteen of the rich man’s actors between 2007 and 2012, from Ur-Jedermann Alexander Moissi to Nicholas Ofczarek. Now he has given the pictures to the city.
No play has shaped the city as much as the Hofmannsthal play, which is performed every year on Domplatz. Twenty actors have embodied this role so far, fifteen of whom have been portrayed by the Salzburg artist Günter Edlinger. It all started with him, Alexander Moissi, the first Jedermann in 1920. Günther Edlinger’s cycle also starts from him: “I have a lot of ideas that I dream up. It was the same with this cycle. I dreamed it. That’s how I started the first one. That was Alexander Moissi.”
Personalities such as Klaus Maria Brandauer, Helmut Lohner, Gert Voss or Peter Simonischek – all painted from photos in their role as Jedermann. The artist explains that there are nine different layers of material, from epoxy resin to acrylic to glaze. The pictures should last forever, he adds.
Dream couple Curd Jürgens and Senta Berger
The main purpose of the donation to the cultural department of the city of Salzburg is to keep the cycle together. Selling individual paintings was out of the question for Edlinger.
The most influential couple for him were Curd Jürgens and Senta Berger: He was a real bon vivant. Like me. You can see that in his expression. All were good. For me, the two were the dream couple on Domplatz.” The pictures can be seen in the Salzburg House of City History until autumn.
