VALS – On Saturday afternoon, two ski tourers were missing in the Tomülpass area in the Safiental. According to the Graubünden canton police, the two winter sports enthusiasts could only be rescued dead from an avalanche cone in the evening.
A 34-year-old alpinist and his 22-year-old companion started at 5 a.m. on Friday morning from the Turrahus mountain inn in Safien Thalkirch and climbed the Piz Tomül on skis. Around noon, other ski tourers would have seen the two on the summit. When the other two reports came in on Saturday, relatives alerted Rega and the Graubünden cantonal police at 4 p.m.
During a search flight in the “Riedboda” area on the Valser side, signals were received using an avalanche transceiver (LVS). “Towards the evening, the two missing persons were located, but only dead from an avalanche cone in the area mentioned, at an altitude of 2050 meters above sea level,” continues the cantonal police. A Rega crew, the Alpine Rescue Graubünden with eleven emergency services, a crew from Swiss Helicopters AG and several employees from Kapo Graubünden were involved in the search. Together with the public prosecutor, the Graubünden cantonal police are clarifying the exact circumstances of the avalanche accident.
