Preliminary traffic balance: Four dead on Easter weekend – Austria –
According to a preliminary assessment by the Ministry of the Interior, the long Easter weekend claimed four lives on Austria’s roads. This number, which was collected up to and including Easter Monday at 6 p.m., is the same as the balance sheets for previous years. Also in 2020 and 2021 there were four deaths on Austria’s roads. In 2019 it was eight. The last time the death toll was lowest was in 2013 with one fatality.
There was a sad record in 1976, when 39 road users lost their lives. According to the information, two people in Carinthia and one person each in Lower Austria and Upper Austria died on the road at Easter. Two pedestrians, a car driver and a motorcyclist were affected.
The traffic volume on the Easter weekend was high, the Ministry of the Interior announced on Monday evening. Accordingly, there were “numerous traffic jams on transit routes and main traffic routes as well as in neuralgic construction site areas”. There were also increased police controls.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) was quoted as follows in the broadcast: “Traffic surveillance never takes a break. During Holy Week and Easter, the police officers focused on countering drivers and speeders and, with their strong presence, once again ensured safe roads in Austria.”
