OM joins PSG and Monaco in European Cup history
Qualified for the last four of the Conference League after their 1-0 victory on Thursday on the lawn of PAOK, Olympique de Marseille joined Paris Saint-Germain and AS Monaco in the European legend.
If they will meet on Sunday evening in Ligue 1 for a particularly awaited Classic, Europe very often remains the favorite playground of the two sworn enemies of French football. Not from the point of view of direct confrontations, but rather by its symbolism. And in this little game, Olympique de Marseille can boast since Thursday evening of having joined Paris Saint-Germain in the history of the European Cups.
>> Relive PAOK-OM minute by minute
Winner of PAOK Salonika in the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League (3-1 on the back and forth) and qualified for the last four of the smallest of European competitions, Marseille climbs for the 7th time in its existence in the semi-finals of a European Cup. In detail: twice in C1, once in C2, three in C3 and once now in C4. The Olympians thus equal the record for a French club co-owned by Paris (3 times in C1, 3 times in C2, 1 time in C3), but also Monaco (4 times in C1, 2 times in C2 and 1 time in C3 ).
A particular format in 1993
In 1992-93, when OM won the Champions League, the players of Raymond Goethals had not played a semi-final to speak of, the format that year offered a group stage (two mini- championships of four teams each, the two winners of which meet in the final) replacing the quarters and halves.
