MAINTENANCE. Are the cycle paths in good condition in Toulouse? The association Two feet two wheels responds
Boris Kozlow, the president of the association “Two feet two wheels”, gives an overview of the state of cycle paths in Toulouse. Interview.
In what condition are the cycle paths in Toulouse?
I find that there has been a clear progress on the cycle paths. Especially along the Canal du Midi. Everything has been redone. The new surface course eliminated quite a few bumps and spalls. The only downside is that it’s the same coating that’s been overlooked. It is not very durable. The problems are likely to return over time.
What are the black spots of bicycle traffic?
On the Hers greenway, on notice of large cracks. They can be dangerous for cyclists who can get their wheels stuck in them. Other cycle paths or bus lanes present problems. This is the case in the rue de Metz, the road is a bit bumpy. On the Velobs application, which makes it possible to declare observations of all kinds and in particular problems, we compile some of these black points. Boulevard des Récollets also returns regularly. If cyclists swerve to avoid the obstacle, it can be dangerous. A car can mow them down. Afterwards, overall, the network is quite extensive now. It is quite well maintained. But more resources are needed.
Is the state of cycle paths responsible for accidents?
It’s hard to say. We don’t often have the circumstances of the accidents. On the other hand, the wave of fatal accidents in 2019 was not due to the poor condition of the road surface. It was either because of the lack of a bike lane or because people were parked on the bike lane. Some of our members, however, inform us of minor accidents caused by potholes or other but we have no statistics.
Do you regularly contact the town hall about potholes?
I called several times to let them know. They respond fairly quickly and correct the problem but often a bandage on areas that are already well cracked. You usually have to wait a week before seeing him butchered.
