There was a time when crossing Garonne en bac was a great classic in Toulouse. At the beginning of the XXand century, this flat-bottomed boat was used by many Toulouse residents.
The tradition has been lost for 100 years but there is still a place where you can cross the Garonne by ferry. And it’s even a good idea to go out in the spring when the weather is good and the temperatures rise. And in summer, it’s a real guarantee of freshness!
Near Portet sur Garonne
The last ferry that allows you to cross the river in Haute-Garonne is in Portet-sur-Garonne (Upper Garonne)south of Toulouse.
After two years of absence due to covid, this ferry has been circulating again since 1uh April 2022. As before the health crisis, it connects the center of Portet-sur-Garonne at Confluent Park Ariège-Garonne.
Free crossing
The crossing which lasts five minutes is free. But be careful, bicycles are not allowed on board.
On the other side of the shore, the Parc du Confluent is a place for hiking. The park has been laid out with trails while precise signage informs you about the surrounding fauna and flora.
Until October 31
Taking the ferry from Portet-sur-Garonne is therefore the gateway to an unusual outing, then a family outing in one of the beautiful natural spaces offered by the Toulouse region.
Please note that at certain times in the summer the ferry may not be able to sail: water level too low, weather conditions (stormy weather or strong winds)…
The ferry will operate until October 31, on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays when weather and navigation conditions permit.
Hourly :
Wednesday: 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday, Sunday and public holidays: from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., then from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
