In Belgium, the wages of all workers are indexed to inflation. When prices rise, earnings follow. In one year, inflation increased by 8.1% in Belgium.
Workers, executives, civil servants… In Belgium, all employees see their salaries increase in line with inflation. A consumption index is thus calculated for current expenditure relating to energy, health, real estate and food. The prices of tobacco, fuel and alcohol are not included in this calculation. When the index increases by 2%, wages also increase by 2%.
In a hairdressing salon, employees have been increased three times since the summer. For the boss, with the employer’s contributions, each increase costs him an average of 85 euros per month and per employee. Belgium is experiencing one of the highest inflation rates in Europe, with 8.1% in one year. For Vassilios Skarlidis, Head of SDWorx Sales, the country has entered a “inflationary spiral”since each wage increase leads to an increase in employers’ contributions and therefore to new inflation.
