Women’s football: Luxembourg bends North Macedonia
Luxembourg took a very big step towards 4th place in its 2023 World Cup qualifying group by winning (2-1) against North Macedonia, this Tuesday at the Émile Mayrisch stadium in Esch-sur -Alzette. A victory which, as against Latvia on Saturday (3-2), bears the seal of Amy Thompson, author again of a double.
Put in difficulty by a ball slipped behind the back of its defense, Luxembourg was immediately picked up cold by a goal from Hristina Joshevska, from the first minute (0-1, 1st). After a timid start, the girls of Dan Santos took control thanks to the agreement of the duo Marta Estevez Garcia-Amy Thompson. The first first applied a nice cross to the second, certainly the smallest player on the ground, who equalized with a header (1-1, 28th). The duo did it again a few minutes later and Amy Thompson finished with a half-volley in the box (2-1, 45′).
With this lead, the Red Lionesses played with fire at the start of the second half, but Natasha Andonova twice (58th, 60th) and Ulza Maksuti (59th) did not find the target. In the wake of the pressing initiated by Laura Miller, Luxembourg gradually took control in the second act and could have widened the gap on a shot on target from Thompson (63rd). At the end of the match, Lucie Schlimé was vigilant on a distant free kick from Pavlinka Nikolvska (81st) then on a strike from Andanova (90th + 2).
