At the beginning of April 2022, during the presentation of the 2022-2023 season of the Théâtre du Capitole, Francis Grass, deputy mayor for culture at the town hall of Toulouse, rejoicing in the fact that the public has returned in droves to the institution, which should also be called today “Opéra national du Capitole de Toulouse”. Indeed, whether for “Carmen”, “The Magic Flute” or the rarest “Platée”, the room was close to being sold out!
A “Tristan” from another planet
Christophe Ghristi, artistic director of this house, has created the sumptuous carpet for a 2022-2023 season skillfully combining great repertoire, masterpieces and world creation. What challenges is the virtual constitution of a real old-fashioned “troupe”, a handful of artists, singers as well as conductors, even directors, whom Christophe Ghristi invites almost every year to the Capitol, delivered thus bonds of familiarity and friendship, certainly winning for everyone. But this “troupe” does not in any way save new voices. And this is what is exciting: the discovery of young talents.
The latter do not hesitate to come and “take” roles at the Capitol because they know the exceptional working conditions that await them. In all the shows of this future season, we will discover new names.
“Rusalka” to open the season
To open the season, Christophe Ghristi displays Antonin Dvorak’s lyrical masterpiece: “Rusalka”, a creation on the spot, with the first undine by Anita Hartig. A new Puccinian Bohemia will follow with a double distribution giving pride of place to the young French school of lyrical art. Ditto for the revival of Mozart’s “Noces” which will follow under the direction of Hervé Niquet.
A world premiere at the Théâtre Garonne
February 2023 will see, at the Theater Garonne, partner, the world premiere, just after the Théâtre de l’Athénée in Paris, of “Dafné”, by Wolfgang Mitterer. Return to familiar territory later with the Wagnerian “Tristan”, in the staging of Nicolas Joel, under the direction of Frank Beermann, with a distribution of… roles: Sophie Koch (Isolde), Nikolaï Schukoff (Tristan), Matthias Goerne (Marke), Anaïk Morel (Brangäne), Pierre-Yves Pruvot (Kurwenal). Apologize a bit!
La Traviata by the late Pierre Rambert will accompany the spring of 2023 with a double international cast. Benjamin Britten’s “The Rape of Lucretia” confirmed the integration of the works of the great British composer into the Capitoline repertoire. The season will end with the premiere in the original language of “Mefistofele” by Boito.
Return of the Sacquebutiers
Many recitals and concerts enrich this program as every year. They allow us to hear Ramon Vargas, Violeta Urmana, Pavol Breslik, Matthias Goerne, Nina Stemme and Stéphane Degout. The return of the Sacqueboutiers, as well as that of the Concert des Nations under the direction of Jordi Savall, obviously constituting equally unmissable events.
It was up to Claire Roserot de Melin, general administrator, to underline the importance of the mission of opening the Capitole to as many people as possible, recalling the cycle of actions adapted to the widest public. As for the ticketing, it is nothing to say that the new habits, probably due to the pandemic, have led the Capitole to offer incredible flexibility in terms of subscription formulas literally à la carte.
