Slovakia at WC 18 Division IA 2012: Return to the elite
For the second time, the Slovak national team under the age of 18 will strive to return to the elite in this age group. I succeeded 10 years ago, but now they will have a slightly easier task. Unlike the 2012 championship, two teams are advancing. In 2012, they had to deal with every opponent.
first we can go back to MS 18 in 2011which shocked the Slovak hockey public. Or not? At that time, the Slovak teams were practically only saved among the elite, so they expected something like falling into the category of many fans. Still, dropping out was considered a big disappointment. The Slovak team entered this championship with a loss to Russia 2: 8. Nikita Kučerov scored 2 goals and 2 assists. This loss was more or less expected, although 8 goals were a lot. Also, a 1: 8 loss to the USA was not taken tragically. The attention of the fans, as well as the players and the implementation team around the coach Jozef Frühauf, was focused on the next matches against Switzerland and Germany. The crucial thing turned out to be the loss against the Swiss, when ten decisive goals fell in our power play. So before the last match against Germany, it was already clear that our team would go to the rescue squad. The Germans defeated the Swiss in the first match and lost to Russia surprisingly only after separate raids, so they had 1 point more in the table than Slovakia and Switzerland. Although our players won 4-0 against the Germans, it was only a small consolation prize.
In the rescue group, they met two rivals, the Czech Republic and Norway. The four were completed by Switzerland. And since the body is transferred for a mutual match from the group phase, the Slovaks were at a disadvantage. On the first day, the Swiss defeated the Norwegians, and at that moment the Slovaks had to know that if they did not want to descend, they would win over the Czech Republic. However, they did not succeed and also lost the second match against Norway. Both of these played into the category. At that time, several players appeared in Slovakia, with whom we still meet today, and several of them also found employment in the senior national team. Patrik Rybár, Martin Gernát and Peter Čerešňák won bronze at the last Olympics, for example.
In year 2012 the goal was clear. Return to the elite immediately. Even then, Slovak players had the advantage of the home environment, because the tournament tournament took place in the same way as now in Piešťany. Only the winner could advance. From the beginning, the focus was on the last match against Norway, which was to decide. This has also been confirmed.
The Slovaks joined in the first match against Italy and the win was 5: 0. Although the state of the match after 2 thirds was only 2: 0. Marko Daňo, who added one assist, also flashed the hat-trick. Mário Lunter scored 1 goal and 3 assists. Patrik Romančík caught a clean sheet, stopping all 20 shots fired at him.
The second match against Japan he let us down a bit. Everyone expected the Slovak team to win and the players finally achieved it. Not just 4 goals? That was what we had at the time. The Slovaks shot the opponent: 1 with a ratio of 484. Marko Daňo scored 1 goal and 2 assists, Martin Reway scored 2 goals. Richard Sabol was in the goal, who scored in the 2nd period.
The third opponent was Slovenia. Here, too, the Slovaks had a significant advantage, but it took a long time for them to turn it into goals. After the 2nd period, they won only 3: 2. In the last part of the game, however, they scored 5 goals and scored 8: 2. The ratio of shots in this match was really eloquent (43: 9). Patrik Romančík scored 2 goals while weakening the Slovak team. Marko Daňo scored another 2 goals and Dominik Rehák scored the same number.
The French it also turned out to be an easy opponent. Only 8 shots were aimed at Richard Sabol, of which he scored 1 goal in the 1st period. They sent our 40 missiles to the gate and 4 of them found their way to the gate. Marko Daňo, Milan Kolena, Mário Lunter and Richard Buri prevailed.
Thus, they could only threaten Slovakia’s progress into the elite category Nori. However, they hesitated in one match and thus made the situation easier for our representatives. In the second match, they lost to Italy 3: 6. This meant that our representatives could also lose, but only after extra time or individual raids. If they lost in regular time, a match would be taken into account if the points were equal. However, the Slovaks left nothing to chance. The drive through the full stands went firmly beyond their goal. Gradually, they increased their estimate until it became an exhibition and eventually won a high 9: 2. another hatred by Marko Daňo. But the biggest star of this match was Martin Reway, who scored 2 goals and 5 assists. At the end of the meeting, we witnessed several fist fights.
The Slovaks thus quickly returned to the elite category. Well, it was immediately clear that it would not be easy. In 2013, they fell again into the fight for rescue, when they lost all matches in the basic group with a total score of 7:19. However, in the changed format, they defeated Latvia twice and thus avoided further embarrassment.
