Arthur Japin writes the most beautiful love phrase in the Netherlands
With the sentence “This is all that matters, dear, that someone sees more in you than you knew there was to see” from his novel A beautiful lack, Arthur Japin has the most beautiful love phrase in the Netherlands. This emerges from a poll by the CPNB Foundation in the run-up to the Boekenweek that starts next Saturday. The winner was announced on Tuesday evening in the radio program Met op morgen on NPO 1.

“In the run-up to the Boekenweek with the theme First Love, we looked for all those invited to the Boekenbal to share with us the most beautiful phrase from Dutch-language literature,” says Eveline Aendekerk, director of the CPNB. “We are overwhelmed by the response. Not only because of the number, but also made: from Arthur Japin to Anne Frank, and from Harry Mulisch to the age-old “Hebban olla vogala”. Our committee, which had to make a top 10 of all these romantic phrases, has not had an easy time!”
The Boekenbal kicks off the 87th edition of the Boekenweek on Friday in the Escape in Amsterdam. That of April 18 will take place and will not take place this year on the traditional Sunday, but on Easter Monday. The theme of the Book Week is First Love.
