The world record of the new head of state of San Marino
Paolo Rondelli, from 1 April Captain Regent of the small Republic, is the first head of state in contemporary history to belong to the LGBT community. With Igor Pellicciari he signs this article and underlines the increasingly important role of “micro” subjects, especially in the midst of the dark war narratives that shake the “macro” dynamics
The more the major systems enter into crisis, the more the events of those acquire importance and visibility.
In moments of confusion of the Macroit is normal to take refuge and respond in the dimension of Micro, facilitated in experimenting with ways out of the main questions of the moment. Which, however, not infrequently lead to the side effect of pushing towards innovations and unprecedented solutions.
Applicable to multiple contests, this maxim fits perfectly with the International System after the fall of the Berlin Wall and with the surprisingly active role that small and very small state subjects played in it.
The post-bipolar context has widened room for maneuver in foreign policy to multiple subjects under water by size and political weight.
Indeed, the acceleration and digital dematerialization of international relations has transformed the limited territorial extension of a country from a nineteenth-century handicap to resource strategy and guarantee of speed of action.
The Republic of San Marino is the demonstration of how micro subjects have become political initiative backdrops and clearing houses on behalf of key players macro (both bilateral and multilateral) and how this function has grown precisely in critical moments.
This is demonstrated by the surprising vaccination diplomacy that allowed the Serenissima, despite the limited resources available, to be the first sovereign country as early as May 2021 Without Covid in the world.
It is a modus operandi that guarantees visibility and results that were unthinkable in the past; from the daily action of government to the very evolution of fundamental rights, whose concrete application is promoted in advance, beyond the empty rhetoric of circumstances.
From tomorrow, 1 April 2022 (today for those who read, ed), the Republic of San Marino will be the first country in contemporary history to have a head of state (one of the two Captains Regent) belonging to the LGBT community.
It is right to dare the small San Marino statehood the credit it deserves for the new record, in particular for two reasons.
The first is that the Head of State in question was chosen for skills and professional merits accumulated over the course of a lifetime and not for the fact of belonging to a minority that is often discriminated against; in the clumsy attempt to make a remedial gesture which, as elsewhere, has actually often resulted in distortion.
The second is that this umpteenth cultural revolution proceeds and takes place despite the fact that the world for a month now has been completely absorbed by dark war narratives that seem to have suspended everything and made everything else regress.
Confirming that when the maximum systems seem to collapse, the minimums remain there to remind us of the positive side of humanity (and the value of peace).
