Higher milk price for farmers – salzburg.ORF.at

Expected to rise sharply in costs, milk prices will also continue to rise: The “Salzburg Milch” dairy is expecting a price increase for the fourth time in nine months. Farmers will receive 50 cents per kilogram of raw milk as a base price from April 1st.
A year ago, Salzburger Milch paid a farmer 39.7 cents for a kilogram of raw milk as the base price. As of now, it’s 50 cents – that’s an increase of a quarter. There have been four increases since autumn 2021.
According to the Chamber of Agriculture, other dairies have followed suit or will do so soon. The reason for the increase is the sharp rise in production costs for milk, says Rupert Quehenberger, President of the Chamber of Agriculture.
“Costs for operating resources have risen massively”
“The costs for purchased feed such as grain through to operating resources such as fuel, electricity or fertilizers – everything is becoming more expensive. As in many other areas, prices have risen massively in agriculture,” emphasizes Quehenberger.
How the recent increase in the price of milk or dairy products in supermarkets will show up is not yet entirely clear. Salzburg Milch is calling for renegotiations here in order to recoup the increased producer prices.
Effects on consumer prices still open
Should this happen, it would also affect consumer prices, emphasizes Spar spokeswoman Nicole Berkmann in a statement. However, one wants to examine the demands of the dairies and negotiate again in order to keep the prices for the consumers as low as possible.
