Melatonin isn’t just related to sleep!
This Wednesday, Doctor Gérard Bersand met the focus on melatonin. This natural hormone regulates our sleep/wake rhythm. This is why it is known for its action promoting sleep, but not only!
What is melatonin used for?
Obviously, its major effect remains the synchronization of the sleep/wake cycle. It can also be interesting in the face of jet lag to recover! However, she plays other roles. Indeed, this hormone has an antioxidant action. It is also a blood sugar regulator and an immuno-stimulant.
How does melatonin secretion work?
Our body will naturally secrete it at the beginning of the night, in the dark. This process stops when day breaks. When melatonin falls in the morning with daylight, the morning peak of cortisol begins!
Our melatonin levels peak around the age of 15. From the age of 20, our rate gradually decreases. As doctor Gérard Bersand explains, after 60 years, we are only at 10% of our melatonin secretion.
So should we supplement? What are good gestures? Answer with Gérard Bersand.
Attention: supplementation must be punctual and under the supervision of a doctor!
