Cross-border commuters cross the border daily to work at the Luxemburg but also to refuel.
Indeed, even if fuel prices in the Grand Duchy have seen many increases, they are essentially cheaper than in France.
Diesel more popular than gasoline
According to the last report customs and excise administration (ADA), fuel consumption in Luxembourg remains high. Especially for diesel.
Efficiency, 1.7 billion liters of diesel were sold in the Grand Duchy during the year 2021 against 439 million liters for gasoline.
By accumulating these sales with the earnings related to electricity in the country, the total revenue for the State is €951 million, according to the ADA. Far ahead of the cash flow made through the sale of tobacco.
Declining sales due to Covid-19
A great recipe for Luxembourg, which had experienced a drastic drop in its fuel sales during the Covid-19 pandemic: its cash inflow linked to energy and electricity amounted to 795 million euros in 2020.
In 2019, more than 486 million liters of gasoline were consumed in the Grand Duchy compared to 372 million the following year.
The same is true for diesel: more than 2.1 billion liters were sold in 2019 before dropping to 1.7 billion liters in 2020.
In short, unlike gasoline, the sale of diesel continues to decline in 2021.
