Nature-Based Solutions at Monaco Ocean Week
After the One Ocean Summit in February 2022 in Brest, the French Committee of the IUCN was present in Monaco during the 5th edition of the Monaco Ocean Week. This annual meeting welcomed during the week the key actors of the world of the sea (public authorities, associative world, scientific community, etc.) committed at the local and international level.. Our participation was an opportunity to present Nature-Based Solutions to respond to climate change in the Mediterranean basin.
Floods, rising waters, fires, droughts, heat waves… the Mediterranean is particularly affected by climate change and will be even more so in the future. To deal with this, the IUCN recommended developing Nature-based Solutions there at its last World Conservation Congress in Marseille (movement 036 ) in order to limit climate change and the associated natural risks, and protect biodiversity.
With the IUCN Center for Mediterranean Cooperation, the Tour du Valat and the Ocean and Climate Platform, the IUCN French Committee organized a conference on this subject on March 25, 2022 to present Nature-based Solutions and feedback from successful experiences and to discuss the appropriation of the concept in a Mediterranean context. From the adaptive management of the ponds and marshes of the Salins de Camargue as solutions to the rise in sea level to the protection of the lido of Sète, the audience was able to take an overview of initiatives to strengthen climate resilience. of the Mediterranean.
It is crucial to invest today in Nature-based Solutions that provide concrete and sustainable answers in the fight against the interconnected crises of climate change and biodiversity. They must be a key element of States’ contributions to the Paris Climate Agreement and the new global biodiversity strategy which will soon be adopted by COP15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
