Hungary purchases bulk products from Rheinmetall
At the end of 2020, Gáspár Maróth announced that it had agreed to establish a large-caliber ammunition factory in Várpalota for the Rheinmetall military industry.
The plant mainly produces types of ammunition that are compatible with the weapon systems regulated by the Hungarian Armed Forces.
Including
- 30-millimeter machine gun ammunition used by Lynx infantry combat vehicles,
- 120 mm ammunition used by the guns of Leopard 2 tanks,
- to produce 155 millimeters of ammunition used by Panzerhaubitze 2000s (and self-propelled artillery devices built on the Rheinmetall HX3) at the plant.
The order placed with Rheinmetall also includes 40-millimeter “Rosy” and 76-millimeter “Maske” mist grenade cartridges, as well as 12.7-millimeter and 7.62-millimeter small-scale ammunition.
Performance of the contract will begin in 2023 and run until 2031.
“The procurement program enables the Armed Forces and the emerging domestic defense industry to work together to authentically guarantee the security and peace of Hungary and the Hungarian people. In the long run, it will provide the armament for the modern combat vehicles that will be regularized. It only keeps in mind the development of the defense industry, as well as the aspects of the revival of the production of domestic munitions, ”said Gáspár Maróth, the government commissioner responsible for defense developments, according to MTI.
