Pilkington Netherlands starts with cardboard • Glass in the picture
Pilkington Netherlands has started using cardboard glass racks. The bucks are for single use. They are therefore used for deliveries to places where the company in principle only visits once. Think of deliveries to a small construction site or private person. The maximum glass size is 1,500 x 1,000 millimeters. The bokken are made of recycled cardboard and can be used in the waste bin for subsequent reuse.
Trainee in Enschede, including Pilkington Netherlands, the carbon glass racks ‘pallets’ because they are transported by pallet truck. They cannot be lifted, even during loading and unloading. We don’t know who the producer is. “We’re not releasing the producer’s name,” Pilkington said.
innovator
The role of Pilkington Netherlands as an innovator in glass is well known. ‘We are continuously engaged in training, also in the field of sustainability and circularity. We’ve brought in C2C and keep trying our production. In addition, we are continuously investigating the possibilities of using glass more and better from the perspective of sustainability. We are committed to that.’
CO2 reduction
With the fossil goats, we keep calling them that, Pilkington Netherlands saves quite a bit of CO2. ‘In terms of production, the environmental impact of a steel or cardboard box is irrelevant. However, we save two-thirds of the emissions on transport. We have calculated the CO2 emissions of our transport at an average of 90 grams per delivery. With these pallets we arrive at an average of 30 grams of CO2. That’s because of the light weight and the fact that we don’t have to go back to pick up the buck.’
Glasbok cost item
We have discussed the problem of the use and return of glass racks several times with regard to the use and return of glass. The use of trestles is a cost item for the glass sector in terms of investment, the fact that they can affect and the administrative system surrounding it. For that reason, there are several effective solutions on the market, ‘track-and-trace’ related. The use of the glass trestles is not an alternative solution due to its limited capacity and vulnerability. For example, the billy goats are only rainproof for 24 hours and the advice is to store them in a dry place. Pilkington Netherlands continues to use traditional sheerlegs for transport to its many permanent addresses.
3.5 percent stake
According to Pilkington Netherlands, it is expected that about 3.5 percent of deliveries can be made with the new sheerlegs. ‘The reactions are extremely positive. We have received many questions, also from the goats. Interested parties can report to us. We are happy to share this innovative way of transport with others in order to stimulate a still created possibility for these pallets, which naturally benefits the environment the most.’
