Zoltán Kovács: that is why Hungary does not allow weapons and soldiers to cross the Hungarian-Ukrainian border
When asked why Hungary does not want to meet the demands of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, for example to allow soldiers to cross the Hungarian-Ukrainian border, Zoltán Kovács emphasized that Hungary has always taken a very strong position due to historical examples and lessons learned. He put it: “this is the will of the Hungarian people, so it is not a matter of compromise or opinion”, but “a mandate that the Prime Minister represents on behalf of the Hungarian people” and “cannot be questioned”.
Speaking of energy, he stressed, in the short term, because of the real situation, “there is no room for any emotional or speculative approach.” And the situation is that
85 percent of Hungary’s oil reserves and 65 percent of its gas come from Russia.
He also said that Hungary’s position on Russian energy is currently very much in line with much of Europe’s interests. He added that they are working hard to make the sanctions imposed on Russia effective, but “there are insurmountable borders” and it is not a matter of my opinion or emotion, but a hard reality, he stressed.
According to him, the Hungarian-Ukrainian relationship has always been very clear. It is in Hungary’s national interest for Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty to be inviolable. Because, as the Prime Minister has repeatedly said, there must be “something” between Russia and Hungary.
Speaking about the economic effects of the war on Hungary, he said:
previous sanctions against Russia place a greater burden on Central European countries such as Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania.
This is due to the proximity of each other within Eastern Europe and the economic cooperation that has already taken place, which includes Russia.
