Toulouse: young people marched for the climate
High school students marched through the streets of Toulouse to warn about the climate.
Several hundred young people strolled for the climate in downtown Toulouse this Friday, March 25. This day of mobilization organized by the association “Youth For Climate” echoed the very origin of the student strike for the climate, a militant act by Greta Thunberg, in front of the Swedish parliament in August 2018. Departing from Arnaud – Bernard, the procession ended on the Jules Guesdes alleys at the end of the afternoon. A march in which the climate emergency is pointed out: “We must accelerate the transition, the IPCC report shows that it is alarming” reacts Rémi, 21 years old. Indeed, the second part of the scientific report published on February 28 informs that these last ten years have been 1.1°C warmer than between 1850 and 1900, that a little less than half of the world’s population lives in a context very vulnerable to climate change or even the rise in sea level linked to the melting of the ice. An important element according to Camille: “At a time when the question of migration is important in the political debate, this rising water level will cause a migration problem since habitable areas will no longer be so”.
Only two weeks before the first round of the presidential elections, ecological issues are still too little part of the debate according to Élise. Jerry, he regrets the situation: “It’s the only way we have to send a message to the political class”. The demonstrators also deplore the climato-skepticism of some of their elders. The slogan attests to this: “Don’t look at us, join us”. A high school student complains about Yannick Jadot’s score in the polls: “The right to vote at the age of 16 seems important to me to move these figures”. For other young people of voting age, the choice will be difficult and risks being “strategic” depending on the results in the polls. For Pierre, the vote will be a compromise: “I feel closer to Mélenchon’s program but I don’t agree with his anti-nuclear side”.
