International – Berlin – Lights off for climate and peace: “Earth Hour” in Berlin – Politics
Berlin (dpa/bb) – In Berlin this Saturday, everyone is called upon again to set an example for climate protection with an hour of darkness. As part of the worldwide “Earth Hour”, the light at the Brandenburg Gate is to go out for one hour at 8:30 p.m., according to the environmental organization WWF. Against the backdrop of the darkened landmark, hundreds of LED lights will form a dove of peace on Pariser Platz to draw attention to the threat of climate crisis and war. This year’s event is dedicated to the desire for peace in Ukraine, in Europe and around the world.
In view of the high number of corona infections, the WWF also called for people to report about it in their own four walls at dusk with the hashtags #LichtAus and #EarthHour on social networks.
The “Earth Hour” was started in 2007 by the environmental foundation WWF in Australia. For years, private individuals as well as cities, municipalities and companies have been involved. According to the WWF, more than 600 cities and communities in Germany have confirmed their participation this year – a new record. According to this, many thousands of cities around the world want to cover their famous buildings in darkness for 60 minutes at 8:30 p.m. local time, including, for example, the Empire State Building in New York or the Taj Mahal in India.
