Toulouse: Artificial Intelligence on the menu of Gourmets de Lettres
This Tuesday, March 22, the author Jérôme Béranger was invited by the association of Gourmets of Letters to discuss his book When Artificial Intelligence will awaken – Journal de Mève.
For this 151st dinner-debate, the meeting was given at 7 p.m. at the brasserie des Arcades, place du Capitole. Published in 2020 by Editions du Passeur, the 344-page book imagines a near future in which Artificial Intelligence (AI) is endowed with a conscience. Jérôme Béranger is a researcher in the Bioethics team at Paul Sabatier University. In parallel with his work, he manages Adeliaa, a company responsible for the support and ethical evaluation of digital projects. “I am interested in the morality of the algorithms that govern my clients’ AI,” explains Jérôme Béranger.
An essay of scientific and philosophical anticipation
The story takes place in 2028 when Mève, the first AI doubled with reason, discovers its artificial nature. “I named my character like this in a nod to the first woman of the Catholic religion, Eve,” says the specialist. Jérôme Béranger is indeed convinced that the next AIs will surpass the simple mimicry of their human creator. “It’s not a phenomenon to be afraid of, we are at the dawn of a fourth industrial revolution that we must anticipate,” says the researcher. In the course of the book, Mève is also responsible for welcoming a generation of AI competing with the capacities of human beings.
Every year Les Gourmets de Lettres organize a Book Fair within the walls of the Hôtel d’Assézat, rue de Metz. The works of this architectural jewel of the Renaissance still become uncertain the location of the next edition.
