“Organizationally, it’s very complicated. We have never known that. » Evelyne Debray, Assistant to the Head of social SAMU to the Rouen Red Cross (Seine-Maritime), as well as other volunteers, are in “total improvisation”. Since Tuesday March 22, 2022, they have been stationed in Rouen station to welcome Ukrainians fleeing the war in their country.
Google translate to communicate
As soon as they get off the train, the refugees discover signs in their language which guide them to the Red Cross stand. There, the volunteers begin by welcoming them and listening to them. To understand each other, most of the time, they go through Google translation.
Then, they give them documents in Ukrainian and direct them to professionals or the local Pasteur town hall, which takes care of finding them temporary accommodation. So far, around 20 people have been taken care of. Among them, a child, who had to be taken to a pediatric emergency.
These Ukrainian people sometimes disembark after a journey of several weeks. “We don’t know where we are going”, breathes Evelyne Debray.
