International – Berlin – Cottbus becomes a hub for Ukraine refugees – Politics
Cottbus (dpa/bb) – After Berlin and Hanover, Cottbus is used as the third hub for the distribution of the thousands of Ukraine refugees arriving in Germany. From Wednesday on, five special trains with a total of around 1,000 war refugees are to arrive in the city every day. The state of Brandenburg, the federal government and the railways had agreed on this capacity. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the special trains come from Wrocław (Breslau) in Poland. From Cottbus, the refugees are taken to various federal states and other European countries by train and bus.
An interim supply is to be offered at the Cottbus main station. Emergency accommodation is available in the exhibition hall for people who are too exhausted to continue their journey immediately. The DRK took over the coordination.
“Nobody has to be cold, nobody has to starve and nobody is left without a place to sleep. That is our premise,” said Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU). However, it is crucial that the federal government finally assumes financial responsibility, for example for accommodation, care and support for the refugees. Neither the city nor the state could handle this tax office burden.
