The Impressionist heritage remains alive and well in Normandy. A Rouen (Seine-Maritime), the Citémômes association continues and renews its artistic and participative project called “Knitting a smile”, which consisted of designing reproductions of paintings by Claude Monet… in knitting. A first giant painting inspired by the series of Cathedrals of Rouen will be unveiled soon. And a sequel is already acquired.
The cathedral at sunset
How it works ? Textile enthusiasts are invited to make wool elements of 5 centimeters by 5, or 10 centimeters by 10, in the proposed palette of tones. The small squares are to be sent directly to Citémômes, or to be deposited in one of the Tricolab, everywhere in Normandy. The full list, here. Once grouped together, they will form the large format work.
This time, among the 40 paintings of the cathedral painted by Claude Monet (between 1892 and 1894), the reproduction is inspired by a version kept in the Hakone Pola Art Museumto Japan. A canvas that represents the building at sunset, that is, in warmer tones than the previous canvas chosen.
“The studio from which Monet painted the Cathedral was large enough to allow him to produce several canvases at the same time, and therefore paint it at different times of the day, explains the Citémômes team. To achieve this, he installed his canvases around him, and changed them according to the light and the climate. Painting from the first to the last light of day, Monet writes on several occasions, in the letters he addresses to his wife who remained in Giverny, that this series is the most exhausting to achieve. »
A project presented in New York
The first knitted reproduction was made in 2016, as part of the Normandy Impressionist festival. The project had provoked the enthusiasm of thousands of little hands, and had even been spotted by the American magazine Vogue. The association was even invited, in January 2017, to present its version of The woman with the parasol turned to the leftin the living room Vogue Knitting Live, an international knitting event held in New York. The second achievement, The bridge over the waterlily pondin 2018, was then unveiled at the New York Marriot Marquis Hotel in Times Square.
