The analysis of the highlights: lack of movement and bad choice
With the idea of providing our readers with richer content, we had the idea of launching one with an analysis of the highlights in a match, whether for goals scored or conceded, or beautiful movements, almost paid fares and such. The goal is to determine the part of collective or individual success or error on each action. This is the 22nd number with sequences during the 3-0 defeat against Monaco (find the summary here) during the 29th day of Ligue 1 2021-2022. There are the first 2 goals conceded and 3 phases of play.
The 1st but, bad pitches.
The situation when the Monegasque centerer, Fofana, will do his long check to go to the side.
The ball comes from a header on the right side and arrives in Fofana’s race. Nuno Mendes (19-year-old left-back) therefore has two choices given the distance: throw himself to try to cut off the opponent’s run (with a possible foul), or start backing up to avoid being caught in depth without going too far so as not to leave too much space. The Portuguese finally advances timidly and is too much on the greenhouses at the time of control, which will allow Fofana to eliminate him on a long control.
Meanwhile, it has been noted that Leandro Paredes (mid 27) and Danilo Pereira (mid 30) could come back to the but faster to support the defense while everyone is 1v1. Achraf Hakimi (23-year-old right-back) would also have reduced for defense.
The situation when Fofana approaches the ball and looks in the middle.
Fofana has therefore taken the lead over Mendes and can look in the center before touching the ball. Wissam Ben Yedder then clearly launches his call for goal, with a small sign in addition to show that he is worth towards goal. Presnel Kimpembe (26-year-old central defender) will continue towards the goal, but without going all the way. Marquinhos (27-year-old central defender), who is behind Ben Yedder, will rather stay back to cover against a possible cross, while there is a player alone in front of the box, not to mention a possibility of passing back which is taking shape. Parisian circles are still late.
The situation when the center leaves.
At the moment of the cross, we can see that Kimpembe stops his race to turn transformed towards the side when he should have continued towards the goal. Do not stop before the 6-meter line, which remains far for an intervention by the goalkeeper on a strong cross. Especially when it’s at the first post like here. Ben Yedder does not stop and will logically be alone.
We also see here that there was a very simple and dangerous back pass, with Paredes who does not seem to worry about it and returns slowly, away from the opponents. The center back is no longer really possible with Marquinhos who is ready to intervene.
The 2nd but cashed.
The situation when Ben Yedder controls on the side.
There is still nothing very special here, except that we still notice that Paredes does not come back as quickly as possible when he needs help in defense. At the same time, we see here very clearly that Marquinhos asks his teammates to take Kevin Volland in the middle, when he must cover the far post for the moment.
The situation when the back pass is made.
Marquinhos was not really listened to, since Volland is alone in front of him. It reduces a little now that the far post no longer has great importance (priority to the nearest danger). He could also try a more aggressive and lively intervention, but he may have in mind that there is a player alone at the far post.
Danilo is probably not in the best possible position, since he is not on this possible pass, but maybe he wants to help cover the but against a strike. In any case, once again, Paredes could try to intervene with more energy while he is only making a small gesture to oppose not much. The ball can therefore go to Volland, a trajectory that the Argentine should have cut.
Paredes lost the ball in the 9th minute.
The situation when Paredes does his check.
The situation is clearly far from ideal for Paredes, who receives a pass from Marquinhos. He is surrounded by moving Monegasque players who form a line before finding the next Parisians; And again, the latter are stopped and taken by Monegasques. We even notice the big void in the middle, with no attacker who would have picked up to offer an additional option.
It was still possible to play on Kimpembe, who could perhaps have passed on to Nuno Mendes afterwards. But it is not without risk, since it is the only pass possible and it is therefore obvious. We can clearly see that the Monegasque laundry has already started in this direction and there would have been no room for control or approximation. Eventually, Paredes tries a check and the rate. The ball is therefore lost and Paris is doing well afterwards with in particular a great return from Marquinhos.
Sequence at the 14th minute.
The situation when Verratti attempts a pass to Hakimi.
Very quickly, we see here that Verratti does not yet have many options since the Monegasques surround him and the Parisians offer nothing. However, Hakimi is alone on the right and the Italian serves him logically. Unfortunately, while a pass in front of the side could have made it possible to continue, the ball arrives rather behind his back. This gives Monaco time to replace itself well. Hakimi will then play on Danilo, who will serve Marquinhos in the back.
The situation when Marquinhos receives the ball from Danilo.
In confidence and in the desire for a fast, offensive game, Marquinhos could have played in one touch towards Paredes, who stands out this time. Of course, Monaco is ready to do the pressing but the pass is thinkable. Paredes could have tried to play quickly forward or to the left, with Wijnaldum and Verratti in particular, who are rather well placed. Moreover, Marquinhos could also have tried to play in front of him on Wijnaldum (there is a Monegasque 1 meter behind his back). Nothing obvious, but it can be tried. Eventually, the Brazilian attempts a check and the fare. Once again, Paris is doing well afterwards.
Sequence at the 32nd minute.
The situation when Paredes goes to make the pass to Neymar.
It’s the most extensive image of the day, with Paredes who could have had many options and probably chose the worst. From bottom to top, there was Nuno Mendes alone on the left with a pass a little in the air widely possible. There is Wijnaldum, who could have come back to him or moved to the left to open up another choice. But he rather tries the depth, perhaps to take advantage of a rise of the defender in the axis. Except that he will run out of speed and there is already Mbappé at the forefront. Which could also have returned a frank appeal to the depth, but rather shifted slightly. There was also Danilo on the right of Paredes, perfectly alone and facing forward.
Finally, Paredes tried the full axis pass for Neymar. Which makes an interesting call. If he is not followed too much, he can attack the full axis defense. If he is covered, as is the case here, then he opens up other options since there are 2 Monegasques taking care of the “cut”. Except that Paredes still makes the pass to him and the ball is unsurprisingly lost.
That’s what’s terrible about this match, often with too few moves and bad choices when there have finally been options to play.
