In Luxembourg – Budding researchers very fed on the climate

LUXEMBOURG – Candidates for the Young Researchers Competition presented their work.
“Light Coke at 60°C: these are the optimal conditions to create an explosion, in a bottle, with a Mentos”, says Leo Gomes, 13, from the Sainte-Sophie School, with supporting tests.
At the Geesseknäppchen, on Sunday, the 63 participants in the National Young Researchers Competition, aged 11 to 21, presented their work. Among the 43 projects, some stood out. Like the Rubik’s Cube solving machine of Pierre Roth, 19, from Lycée Michel Rodange.
The majority girls
The climate was at the heart of several projects. “I analyze aerial images using artificial intelligence to identify areas where the trees are diseased,” notes Krezesimir Hyzyk, 16, from the European School Kirchberg. “He was even invited to COP 26,” says Edouard Olszewski, from the Luxembourg Young Scientists Foundation. The latter organizes and provides young scientific expertise, labs, etc.
Lynn Schneider and Francine Aben, 17, from Atert-Lycée, created bioplastic cling film made from potato starch. “We have to improve it, it still dissolves too easily with humidity”.
Young girls were in the majority. After two of her sisters, Sophie Barberon, 16, from ISL, created herself. “I created an application to teach French to adults”. The difficulty: “some threads exist in one language and not in the other. The app is working on that.
