Forecast: Weaker grain harvest in Bulgaria, Romania and the EU as a whole
A few days ago, the European Organization of Traders in Cereals, Oilseeds, Vegetable Oils and Meal (COCERAL) announced its second updated forecast for the Union’s cereal habitat in 2022.
This season, according to COCERAL, the total production of cereals in the European Union (EU-27) in 2022 will amount to 282.62 million tons, 2.26 million tons less than in 2021. EU wheat production in the EU-27 is expected to decline by BGN 2.17 million in 2022, from 129.06 million tonnes to 126.89 million tonnes, mainly due to a return to average performance in the Balkans. after very high indicators registered in the past year.
Our northern neighbor is a typical example in this regard. Wheat production in Romania in 2021 amounted to 10.42 million tons with an average yield per hectare of 5.01 tons. The acquisition forecast for 2022 is rather pessimistic – 4.25 tons per hectare, which implies a decrease in production volume, aimed at the previous season by 1.69 million tons – up to 8.73 million tons
According to Soseral, the new wheat harvest in Bulgaria will be about 6.06 million tons with an average yield of 5.20 tons per hectare, compared to 7.14 million tons and 6.05 tons / ha in 2021. 1 million tons less wheat will be harvested by French farmers in 2022, but production in Germany will increase by 0.66 million tons – to 34.51 million tons.
The shopping center commented that the expected reduction in production compared to last year’s results is insignificant and, as the whole forecast, relatively optimistic, as it shows an increase of 8.15 million tons compared to the unfavorable year for the EU 2020. In addition, the updated forecast is 1.51 million tonnes higher than estimated in the December report.

The forecast for the maize home in the EU in 2022 has been improved by 1 million tonnes, from 66.27 million tonnes to 67.24 million tonnes, which is almost completely covered by last year’s result.
However, behind the almost unchanged general indicator, there are quite significant changes in the volume of production in individual countries. For example, according to the March forecast, corn production in France in 2022 will fall by 1.08 million tons to 14.26 million tons. At the same time, Hungary saw an increase in production of 1.8 million tons, compared to the results of the previous season, from 6.42 million tons to 8.22 million tons.
The forecast for the production of corn in Romania is optimistic – 12.23 million tons, with 530 thousand tons above the December forecast and 140 thousand tons more than produced during the year.
The forecast for Bulgaria is also positive – 3.84 million tons compared to 3.29 million tons in 2021.
