Around 3.2 million people have fled Ukraine since the start of the war. Experts estimate that up to 200,000 refugees from Ukraine could come to Austria. How well is Austria prepared? Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) was a guest of Margit Laufer in “ZIB2” on Thursday evening.
Day 22 – Terminator intervenes in Ukraine war
There are “terrible pictures” that can be seen from Mariupol. Politicians and civil society must do “everything humanly possible” to help the displaced. In this breath he thanked the aid organizations, such as Caritas, Diakonie and the Samaritan Association. Many private individuals also called for their help. He asks all those who have not yet received a response to be patient. “Thank God there are still private quarters available,” said the minister – they will still be needed.
Austria starts air evacuations
The immediate neighbors of Ukraine have already done a lot, now the responsibility also lies with other European countries. Austria, for example, WILL demand air evacuations from the Republic of Moldova “in the next few days” and in this way bring 2,000 war refugees to Austria. He asked for your understanding that he did not give any exact dates. But it’s about sick people or orphans – “vulnerable groups”, as Karner said.
“It’s not about quotes, it’s about people,” Karner struck in unusual tones for an interior minister when it came to the topic of refugees. Currently, 80 to 85 percent of all people who arrive in Austria would travel on to other European countries. The federal states would also help a lot in taking in refugees, said Karner.
Now it is important to give people “security and hope” and a place to sleep. The next step is to give people access to the workplace. The earnings limit and other details are currently still being worked out, but the politician has not yet given any concrete facts. In any case, it is a “Herculean task and a marathon” to take care of these people. The politician demanded that everyone should pull together.
