The National Film Board of Canada takes part in Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2022 with two short films in competition, signed by creators with unique and recognized talents. More than 10 years after their last animated film, the internationally acclaimed filmmakers Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis are back with The Flying Sailor (The Flying Sailor), featured in the official contest. For its part, Meneath: the secret island of ethics by award-winning artist Terril CalderCree-Métis Orkney, will be screened in the category Viewpoints, which supports in particular works proposed from singular glances. The Annecy Festival, which will be held from June 13 to 18, 2022, is the world’s largest event dedicated to animation, welcoming creators and creators from the milieu and offering an unmissable professional meeting.

- Inspired by a true story, the highly anticipated new film from Oscar-nominated duo Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis is an existential meditation on a sailor’s unexpected journey.
- Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis met at Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver, where they were studying film, video and animation. They then each worked on their own works at the NFB (Strings by Wendy Tilby and The Reluctant Deckhand by Jan Padgett, hosted by Amanda Forbis) before co-directing When day breaks, nominated for the Oscars and winner of more than 30 international awards, including the Palme d’or for short films at Cannes. In 2012, their animated short film A wild life notably received an Oscar nomination.

Meneath: the secret island of ethics (Meneath: the hidden island of ethics) by Terril Calder (19 min 22 s)

- In this stop-motion animation film, creator Terril Calder illustrates the difficult journey of a lively and precocious Métis girl convinced that she is destined for hell.
- The short film was selected at Berlin Festival 2022, after its world premiere in 2021 at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Awards obtained so far:
- A Toronto-based multidisciplinary creative from Fort Frances, Ontario, Terril Calder is one of Canada’s foremost Métis Nation media artists.
