Diederik Boomsma (CDA Amsterdam) wins title of Best Councilor of the Netherlands
Boomsma received the award from D66 MP Jan Paternotte, who won the 2010 election. “The jury found it difficult, it took 2.5 hours to discuss this choice,” says Paternotte at the award ceremony. “In the end, the public decided.”
The other two finalists were Eva de Bruijn (GoenLinks Eindhoven) and Doğukan Arif Ergin (Denk Schiedam). Boomsma received 5913 votes, half of which counted towards the generation. The other half was determined by an eight-member jury. Ergin ultimately directed 3,856 votes, De Bruijn 3,496.
The nomination as best councilor does not guarantee success in the elections. Where the CDA still received 3 percent of the vote in 2018, the party comes out at 2 percent in the latest poll. It would be a hard blow for Boomsma if he was the last CDA councilor in Amsterdam. He is praised for his tenacity on dossiers, including leasehold, and was sometimes ahead of his time when it came to the problems surrounding the red light district and liberal drug policy.
Dear Councilor of the Netherlands
The election of the Best Councilor of the Netherlands is an initiative of campaign agency BKB, de Volkskranttalk show mNPO Radio 1 program The News BV and the Pericles Institute. According to creator Erik (BKB), good councilors are local heroes of the past, especially now that more horses are coming down on the municipalities.
In 2018 the title went to Johnas van Lammeren of the Party for the Animals in Amsterdam.
