Toulouse: Mikl Mayer, an author well in his bubble
Milk Mayer lives for and through comics. Author of a dozen albums, this 34-year-old Toulouse man crunches everything that comes to mind. For the elections, he even planned an episode in “My dads and me”.
When he is not working at the checkouts or in the offices of the Fonbeauzard supermarket, Mikl Mayer draws. A devouring passion that has driven him from an early age, thanks in particular to Walt Disney cartoons, he was nurtured “I remember, at the age of 6, I had made a drawing, rather successful, from of a character from the movie Sonic. My parents were convinced that I had traced it. I had to do it again in front of them to prove them wrong,” says Mikl Mayer.
Since then, the Toulouse designer has largely refined his pencil stroke. He is now the author of 12 albums, imagined in five different universes. The first, “Les D’Jeunes” was conceived in 2005 “and will be published on December 9, 2009”, Mikl Mayer remembers the date perfectly. Will follow: “In cash” (released in 2011 only on the net), “My dads and me” (2014), “The world according to Loïc” (2020, his biggest success on his site), and finally “Animals and company “.
In each, Mikl Mayer sketches both social facts, his professional daily life and even his own environment. Also, it is not uncommon for his colleagues, his clients, his mother and even his cat Luminoh to find themselves immortalized on his boards. It is moreover his tomcat, “his baby” who led him to realize “Animals and Company”.
And guess the theme of his next comic “My dads and me” published on the internet from March 13? “The elections, just to wink at our news”, slips the designer.
naturally reserved
Mikl Mayer was born in Pont-à-Mousson, near Nancy. He arrived in Toulouse at the age of 15 and joined the Collège des Viollettes in Fonbeauzard where he was encouraged by his drawing teacher. “Even if afterwards I planted myself at the Angoulème festival and so much the better for me”, he admits, with hindsight.
Subsequently, Mikl Mayer went to the Colomiers comic book festival for the first time with his father. This is where he meets Mogambo. “It’s thanks to them that I was able to work on my universe and stay there,” he says.
His universe precisely, “at the beginning, I talk about my problems as a teenager, trying to make fun of them. I was very withdrawn. Today, I like to talk about the social problems that affect me, such as same-sex parenthood with marriage for all (“My dads and me), serophobia (“The world according to Loïc”), my work (“En caisse ), etc. “. As for his characters, they are distinguished by their voluminous hair, their big eyes and slender silhouettes, “the influence of Walt Disney”, recognizes Mikl Mayer.
He is recognizable by his blond hair, his discreet retractor in the right lobe of the ear, and his clear eyes which do not miss a crumb. Mikl Mayer has no equal in capturing tics, crossing them or even sentences that hit the mark. Of a very reserved nature, do not count on this boy to put himself forward. He is also not one to brag about the support of Arielle Dombasle and Amande Lear, for the edition of “My dads and me”.
cinema and photography lover
Lover of photography and cinema (Batman, Xavier Dolan, and Tim Burton), the Toulouse designer has more than one string to his bow. When he is not creating albums, he runs his site where he offers a web-comic board every Sunday accessible by subscription (€2/month). It also ensures a double page, every two months, in the magazine “La Fringale Culturelle”. So many activities that monopolize all his free time and even beyond. “Sometimes I draw all night, and sometimes even forget to eat.” When we tell you that he is well in his bubble!
