San Marino and Ukrainians united for peace!
New call for a ceasefire and a diplomatic solution to the conflict. The San Marino families have given an answer to solidarity, welcoming even more help of extraordinary solidarity. A warm welcome has been given to them since yesterday’s peace march
With yesterday afternoon’s peace march, which was also attended by Ukrainian citizens, San Marino said another banquet to the war in Ukraine, intensifying the request for an immediate ceasefire, a diplomatic solution to the conflict and activation of all humanitarian aid needed to relieve victims affected by the Russian invasion and refugees who have fled or are fleeing to other countries. Among the Ukrainian citizens, in addition to the assistants for the elderly who live and work in our country, also some of the refugees who are guests of the San Marino families, which many joined the reception of San Marino and the appeal of those who work, with an act of great human solidarity which demonstrates the concrete closeness of our country to the population of this war-torn republic. The march started with a colorful procession of peace flags from the square of the former station to Piazza della Libertà , chanting slogans in Ukrainian and Italian.
In the square that is the symbol of San Marino statehood, the demonstration opened by resounding the national anthems of Ukraine and San Marino, in an atmosphere of great emotion. The hymn to partisan resistance, Bella Ciao, was also broadcast, unfortunately returning to the fore among the Ukrainian fighters who oppose the Russian invasion. The General Secretaries of the three trade union organizations took the floor; Giorgia Giacomini of the USL, Gianluca Montanari of the CDLS, Enzo Merlini of the CSdL. The firm request for an immediate cessation of war operations was reiterated by the trade union leaders.
A conflict that has come to hit civilians with bombing in several cities, as never expected. Faced with so many Ukrainian people who in San Marino accompany the elderly of San Marino on a daily basis, the least that the union does is to dare to give them a voice and support the reception of their families, as well as to commit themselves to humanitarian aid. The organizations are, in fact, intend to join the pension coordinated by the Civil Protection and the Foreign Secretariat, whose bank details have been communicated in recent days, and invite workers, newspapers and citizens to join in turn.
With this demonstration, the San Marino trade unions have also accepted the invitation of the European Confederation of Trade Unions to join in this action of solidarity and welcome towards refugees, and to the same Ukrainian trade unions that are doing everything to protect the people who remain in their country, in these days of war.
A Ukrainian citizen who has worked for years in our country then intervened, and who saw her family members, four children and three adults, among the refugees hosted by San Marino families, arrive in San Marino. He expressed his heartfelt thanks and particularly moved to the Republic of the Titan and to all its citizens for the willingness with which they allowed the arrival of many of his compatriots fleeing this barbaric war that affects many defenseless citizens and sensitive points, such as hospitals. She said she was proud of the San Marino union that organized the demonstration and above all of her people, and in particular those who remained in Ukrainian territory and are proudly resisting the invasion of a much larger and more powerful militarily force.
The Secretaries for Foreign Affairs and Labor, representing the Government, then received a delegation of the demonstration at the Palazzo from a family of refugees, who had come to the Titan for a reunion, and from the heads of the three trade unions, reaffirming their firm condemnation of the Russian military initiative and confirming the will of the institutions to do everything possible in terms of welcoming and supporting the Ukrainian population.
