Slight increase in viral effluent load
An increasing trend is evident in the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 cargo in the natural waste of Thessaloniki in the new measurements for the research conducted by the Sewage Epidemiology Team of AUTh with EYATH, in collaboration with the Region of Central Macedonia and within the National Network. of EODY.
As shown in the diagrams presented by APE-MPE, from mid-February onwards, the daily fluctuations as an average value reflected a stabilization of the viral load of sewage, a course that, however, in the last week tends to increase.
Specifically, in the samples taken daily at the entrance of the Thessaloniki Wastewater Treatment Plant, regarding the rationalized values related to the secretion of viral load, the average value of the two most recent measurements, ie Monday 07/03/2022 and Tuesday 03/08 / 2022. is:
- Marginally stable (+ 7%) in relation to the average value of the two immediately preceding measurements of Saturday 05/03/2022 and Sunday 06/03/2022.
- Marginally increased (+ 24%) compared to the average price of the previous Monday 28/02/2022 and Tuesday 01/03/202.
“The spread of the virus in the community of Thessaloniki is anything but negligible. “Everyone understands this, not only by being informed of our measurements or the daily number of confirmed cases that are announced, but also by finding out from the cases in their family, professional, friendly environment”, said to APE-MPE the rector of AUTh and scientific officials . of the research project, Professor Nikos Papaioannou.
“So,” he added, “as the universal dominance of the Omicron strain and the vaccination coverage have allowed a return to everyday life, much like we knew about coronavirus, individual responsibility is emerging as the most critical factor at this time, both for prevention and self-protection.” from our exposure to the virus, but mainly to protect the most vulnerable to serious disease “.
The coronavirus assessment methodology in municipal waste, developed by the AUTh team, streamlines the measurements of its genome concentration based on 24 environmental factors, which may alter the results of the measurements.
