Instead of the hoped-for great moment Red Bull Salzburg on Tuesday in the Champions League plunged into a historic debacle. Austria’s series champions had to fight in the round of 16 second leg Bayern Munich beaten with 1:7 (0:4). Despite the 1-1 draw in the first leg, the expected quarter-finals was a long way off. World footballer Robert Lewandowski scored the first three goals (12th, 21st, 23rd). Salzburg only managed the consolation goal through Maurits Kjaergaard (70th).
It was Salzburg’s heaviest competitive defeat since the legendary 7:00 on Easter Sunday in 2008 against Rapid. Salzburg have not lost a party with a difference of more than four goals since Red Bull joined in 2005. A corona cluster that afflicted the team at the end of February seemed to have left its mark.
Lewandowski’s hat trick ensures clear conditions early on. The two penalties to make it 1-0 and 2-0 were preceded by fouls by Maximilian Wöber on Poland. Serge Gnabry (31st), Thomas Müller (54th, 83rd) and Leroy Sane (85th) scored for Bayern, who were superior in all respects.
Captain Manuel Neuer returns to goal for Bayern a month after knee surgery. The recently weakened ex-Salzburger Dayot Upamecano sat on the substitute bench, but was substituted on in contrast to ÖFB team player Marcel Sabitzer. Salzburg central defender Oumar Solet has recovered from a thigh problem. In the absence of the injured Noah Okafor, Junior Adamu, as expected, joined Karim Adeyemi in the attack.
Solet, Wöber and Co. had Lewandowski much less under control than in the first leg. Salzburg goalkeeper Philipp Köhn had to defuse Poland’s first shot after a minute. On the other side, Capaldo failed to score the ball after Adeyemi crossed the ball (2′). Nicolas Seiwald missed a second big chance for the Bulls, whose shot from a good position deflected Neuer over the goal (15 ‘) – but by then it was already 0:1.
Lewandowski let Wöber out with a remarkable ball acceptance in the penalty area, the Salzburg defender only knew how to help himself with a foul. Lewandowski scored safely. Less than ten minutes later, Wöber brought the 33-year-old down again on the edge of the penalty area. The referee originally decided on a free kick, but after the VAR study there was another penalty – and Lewandowski hit the left corner.
A little later, an unnecessary excursion by Köhn meant that Wöber was no longer able to intervene against Lewandowski, who broke through. The ball bounced from the Pole first to the bar, but Lewandowski pushed it over the line with his hip. It was the fastest hat trick in Champions League history after the start of the game. Lewandowski is now leading the CL list again with twelve goals in eight parties. The two-time world footballer has also scored 28 times in the league this season.
Things got even worse for Salzburg: After Mohamed Camara lost the ball in his own third of defense, Kingsley Coman served DFB team player Gnabry, who shot in from the inside. Köhn touched the ball but couldn’t stop it.
Bayern could have led even higher before the break with Lewandowski (37′) and Benjamin Pavard (39′), but only did so after Müller had changed sides. The original Bayer traffic after a combination via Joshua Kimmich, whom Salzburg switched and let prevail in the center of midfield, and Leroy Sane from the turn. No less worth seeing, if only cosmetically the 1: 5: Brenden Aaronson served the substitute Kjaergaard. The 18-year-old Dane scored his first European Cup goal in the short Kreuzeck.
The game already had the character of a test game. Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann gave some reservists the chance, as did his Salzburg supporter Matthias Jaissle. But the Munich team hadn’t had enough of scoring goals: Müller prevented his second goal after a one-two with Sane. The two-time assistant was also successful in the finish after a mistake by substitute Benjamin Sesko.
For Bayern it was the first third win in the last six competitive games. Salzburg, on the other hand, suffered the highest European Cup defeat in the club’s history. Already inferior to Bayern-Kriegsmann at home in November 2020 by 2: 6. Under Jaissle they had not conceded more than two goals in a competitive game so far this season.
