Project in Bonnevoie – Towards a second central station in Luxembourg
Luxembourg station is currently undergoing change, with new platforms being built and a railway infrastructure renewal project. But that’s not all. These sites currently occupy land freed up by the demolition of the former CFL workshops. And, if half of these lands will accommodate the new quays, the other half will be free at the end of the works.
The Minister of Infrastructure François Bausch, questioned by the deputy déi gréng François Benoy, announces that this half of land will be allocated to… a new station. “This land is intended to be developed to accommodate a passenger building on the Bonenvoie side, to create a two-sided station”, writes the minister. This will make it possible to have an infrastructure “even better integrated and connected to the urban fabric”. The station will also have a bus station, as on the other side of the tracks. Given the current construction sites, however, work could not begin before 2026.
An ambitious project that will need to be carried out with the Ponts et Chaussées, since this will greatly impact the Rocade de Bonnevoie. This one could well change face in depth. Indeed, “motorized traffic” must be “appeased” there to “improve infrastructures for active mobility” and “promote public transport”. Clearly, this future hinge between Bonnevoie and the central station, today the axis of entry by car to the city, will be used much less by motorists in the future. The project to pass the road through a tunnel under the ring road is however considered “little rendered”.
