The Grande-Rue Saint-Michel is a one-way street, major upheaval in prospect
This Monday, with the end of the school holidays, traffic is likely to be dense in Toulouse. And on the side of Grande-Rue Saint-Michel, for his first day one-way experimentation, we even expect it to be very very complicated to ride. After several months of consultation, the town hall is launching its project to calm the neighborhood, which will certainly go through a period of tension at the beginning.
Cars coming from the city center via Place Lafourcade could no longer reach via this central axis of the Pink City, the true southern gateway to the city and access to the ring road.
Only buses and bicycles will now be allowed to use the street in both directions. To access the district from the allées Jules-Guede, residents will now have to go to the boulevard Maréchal-Juin, the allées des Demoiselles and the adjacent streets. The direction of traffic on rue Beethoven, between Grande-Rue and Achille-Viadieu is reversed. However, the portion between the prison and the intersection with boulevard des Récollets remains a two-way street.
First stone of the Express Bike Network
This small revolution which aims to eliminate transit traffic is the first stone of a larger project to renovate the district. “A meeting before the summer holidays is scheduled to take stock of this experiment. Throughout the year, the town planners in consultation with the population will continue to work on a neighborhood redevelopment project, the greening of the street,” says Jonnhy Dunal, the neighborhood mayor.
A rehabilitation project which will be definitively adopted by the end of the year, for the first pickaxe next year and a delivery for 2024. A project which should cost between 7 and 8 million euros. The elimination of nearly 3,000 vehicles which pass by there every day from this Monday also initiates the creation of the future Réseau express vélo (REV), which will eventually connect the city center to Ramonville-Saint-Agne.
